Three Ways You Can Help:
Gift of Life Transplant House
When families arrive in Rochester for a transplant, they’re often carrying uncertainty, exhaustion, and the weight of a life-changing medical journey. In those moments, having a place that offers comfort, stability, and a sense of normalcy can make all the difference. That’s the role of the Gift of Life Transplant House.
“Truly it’s a place where guests and their caregivers can feel like they’re at a home away from home,” says Executive Director Stephanie Donovan. “It’s set up like community-style living, with people being around other going through the same journey.”
Founded in 1984, the Rochester nonprofit provides affordable lodging for transplant patients and their caregivers. What began as a small eight-bedroom home has grown into the largest transplant hospitality house in the nation, now offering 87 guest rooms across its campus.
The organization supports patients at every stage of the transplant process – from evaluation appointments to surgery and lifelong follow-up care. Stays can range from just a few days to several months, depending on individual needs, and guests come from across the country and around the world.
Donovan and others who work at the House say the most meaningful part of their work is witnessing the transformation guests experience. “We have the opportunity to see people come in at their very worst,” Donovan says. “Then they receive their transplant, and you might see someone who arrive in a wheelchair walking out on their own for the first time in years. Seeing how a transplant can change someone’s life overnight is a great feeling.”
In August 2025, Gift of Life expanded its reach with a dedicated pediatric transplant house, allowing children and their families to stay together in a more supportive, family-centered setting.
Demand for rooms is consistently high, and the house is often at capacity. When needed, the organization partners with local hotels to ensure guests still have a place to stay until space becomes available.
As a nonprofit, Gift of Life relies on community support to keep stays affordable, charging just $30 per night.
